The xx - I See You (Written a year ago)

I See You by The xx opens with rhythmic trumpets in Dangerous, welcoming the band into its newly born sound of club culture. Their previous obsession of longing and sadness has grown into something sweet, that radiates love and optimism. It’s evolved into an electronic beat inspired by Jamie xx.

Their new-found love of Ibiza house music is heard in Violent Noise, a song that directly connects to Oliver's past excessive drinking problem. Romy's well-known talent linked to her guitar playing of riffs and synths weave in and out of Oliver's thick bass line, creating the perfect balance of a house beat.

1024px-Xx_album_cover.svgCompared to their 2012 album, Coexist, which was encompassed with torturous longing, I See You, is fixated on the journey of growth to empowerment and facing your own issues. Though the 5th track, Performance, is sang as a solo by Romy, infatuated with the idea of putting on a mask, "I'll put on a performance, I'll put on a brave face." Its slow-downbeat rhythm sounds similar to a Coexist song, with its high tune plucking of a guitar.

The band have engaged collaboratively on this album, combining their ideas to write new music. Their previous albums had lingering feelings of parallel stories being told, but it's subtly intimate this time.
The song, Lips, expresses their collective work with lead singing from Romy, backing from Oliver and the first lyrics inspired by Jamie xx. A steady drum beat sustains throughout the song, whilst a mixture of voices are played over each other during the chorus. With the help of an electronic synth appearing every so often, it reflects their new image.

There's a real connection between the dynamics of the members this time, Test Me, was originally written by Romy about Oliver's carelessness over the years. But she expressed in an interview the importance for him to sing it with her, as a way of the friendship being healed.
Something magical has been created into their single, On Hold, maybe the softness of Romy's voice over Oliver's harsh vocals. Either way, its sombre tone slowly grows into steady beats with repetitive notes and a syncopated rhythm.

The completely diverse sounds of two voices back to back, over Jamie xx's producing skills is the perfect compilation of a genius track. Jamie selected a Hall and Oates sample // I Can’t Go for That which turned a melancholy feel of a song, into one made for dancing. It nails the house theme they've aimed for.

The album was written, recorded and inspired all over the world, Replica, represents LA, according to Oliver. They were on a road trip from Seattle to LA whilst writing the track, seeing the coast's exquisite scene influenced the confessional lyrics of avoiding following in someone's footsteps, "They all say I will become a replica".

They were once popular for the kind of music that touched close to loneliness and desperation, a gig would ensure people were sat down. Now it’s a task to stay seated when hearing loud and clear their new image of electronic happiness.
