Coldplay Review (Written a year ago)

Coldplay's concert began with thousands of fans wearing glowing bracelets that lit up the dark arena, as the back beat of the first song started to play, A Head Full of Dreams. Anyone who knows of Chris Martin’s performances, should be familiar of his lively dance moves as he sings to the audience which complement the audio entirely.

From the beginning of the gig he gives more than 100% effort and connects with the audience, as he does later on with the rest of his band members. After starting with an upbeat song to get the crowd jumping, the band, along with their perfectly played instruments slow the tempo down into Yellow, one of their older songs from their album Parachutes in 2000. The prompt change of tempo again connects the artists to their audience, considering it’s one of their ultimate classics. Every opening to a new song is no less invigorating than the others which passes on a feeling of energy.

Chris Martin’s vocals can be described as unique because of one particular aspect when performing. In a way, his voice is rather husky and sometimes hitches when he sings. This may be due to the amount of energy he puts into his performance due to the jumping round, or just the specialty of voice he has to offer. But we can admit it does fit in nicely with the lyrics. During Sky Full of Stars, as the lyrics “But I’ll still raise the flag” emerge, he raises the American flag.

Each member of the band have their own particular part and instrument to play and it’s comforting to see a structured view. But Chris tends to change his position and performance in each song which is refreshing. Also the switching from old albums to new allows everyone to embrace their old music which we all fell in love with a long time ago.

Along with the songs, the lighting on the stage contribute to the whole experience, Always in My Head, begins with space-like atmosphere lighting. Although the song’s lyrics do not link to space, it still sets an attractive image. The positioning and space used by the members Guy Berryman, Will Champion and Johnny Buckland is very fixed. But again, as you can imagine, Chris is all over the place; not in a careless manner though. He’s constantly connecting with the members and building relationships with the crowd by singing to them, rather than singing at them.

It’s almost as if Coldplay have a sense of charm about them and this, along with their pop/alternative style of music is what makes them so pleasant to watch perform.
